	Computers and Genealogy are my interests

• Having retired from the U.S. Navy and a second career in the computer industry, I have many interests. Computers and genealogy are my main focus. However, golf, flying, and boating (after all, where would a sailor be without the love of the water) also tempt me at times.  My Navy page tells more about my USN career and links to other Navy websites.
• I live in Montgomery County, Kentucky and have been involved with genealogical research for over 30 years.  As a member of the online community, I have met a number of cousins while researching my family.
• Being an avid computer genealogist, I belong to such organizations as the National Genealogical Society (NGS), the New England Historical and Genealogical Society (NEHGS), the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS), the Kentucky Genealogical Society, and the Montgomery County, Kentucky Historical Society. I've also served on the Technology Committee of GENTECH, Inc. as chair of the Genealogical Data Exchange Sub-Committee. Finally I wrote a column of tips about The Master Genealogist in the semi-monthly magazine, Everton's Genealogical Helper from 1997 to 2001 (see columns here).

Here are some surnames that interest me:

• HOFFMAN/HUFFMAN -- Nassau-Siegen, Germany to Culpeper County, Virginia in 1734, to Montgomery County, Kentucky in 1806 (some 250 database names).
• OREAR/O'REAR -- Mid/late 1600s/early 1700s to Virginia, to Central Kentucky in 1775, also other O'Rear/Orears in the U.S.(some 5,000 database names). See my O'Rear Descendancy Charts. Information and speculation concerning the origin of the O'Rear family in the U.S is available on this page.
• CATLETT -- County Kent, England to Virginia about 1620 then late 1700 & later throughout the U.S. (about 3800 database names).
• SMITHA/SMITHY -- Virginia (?) to Kentucky late 1700s/early 1800s
• BURBRIDGE -- Virginia (?) to Central Kentucky (mostly Bath County) (some 200 database names).
• JONES -- North Carolina to Kentucky in 1783. Settled in what is now Fleming and Bath Counties (over 1000 database names).
• GRUBBS -- Cornwall to Delaware to Central Kentucky - in Central Kentucky by 1775 (about 650 names).
• OLDHAM -- North Carolina to Kentucky - late 1700s (about 950 names).
• MAUPIN -- France to The Netherlands to Virginia to Kentucky (about 550 database names).
• DABNEY -- France to Virginia to Kentucky (some 800 database names).
• GILL -- Scotland to Ireland to New Jersey to South Carolina to Kentucky (over 550 database names). See my Gill Descendancy report.
• JARMAN -- Virginia to Madison County. Kentucky (about 200 database names).

And my wife:

• BALL -- Virginia to now West Virginia to Kentucky in 1868 (over 750 database names).
• BARR/O'BARR -- Bourbon, Nicholas, Mason and Montgomery Counties (about 550 database names).
• CONLEY -- Bath County, Kentucky (over 250 database names).
• DAVIS -- Montgomery County, Kentucky (some 380 database names).
• ISHMAEL -- Pennsylvania in 1736(?) to Fleming County, Kentucky in 1783 (about 2000 database names).
• SUTTLE -- Montgomery and Bath Counties, Kentucky (about 250 database names).
• TOLER -- Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1837 to Mason County, Kentucky in 1868 (over 350 database names).
• WILSON -- Mason and Nicholas Counties, Kentucky to Montgomery County, Kentucky (over 500 database names).

• My ancestral chart shows my ancestry back farther than is probably accurate. But the first two hundred years are good. Now if I can just fill in some of those empty lines.
• An index of names may be seen also.
• The Table of Contents for a narrative report of my ancestry (five generations) was created from The Master Genealogist (TMG) program.  Unlike the narrative on Judge E. C. O'Rear below, this narrative and associated pages have had some minor editing.  Primarily, the editing was needed to ensure the desired placement of pictures. 
• The Endnotes for my ancestral narrative.
• The Bibliography for my ancestral  narrative.
• An index of names for my ancestral narrative. 
•  A list of 23,934 cities in Nordrhein Westfalen, Germany was compiled into a PDF file by a friend, Richard Brogger.  This file requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader .
• My wife's ancestral chart shows her ancestry is in need of a lot of research time.
• Also the names index for her chart is available.
• A Smitha Descendancy Chart shows the little I know of that line.
• O'rear Descendancy Chart of the earliest known O'Rears known or thought to have come to America. This chart is further expanded on three other charts showing most of the known O'Rear descendents.  Much of this information is due to more than 50 years of  research by the late Edward C. O'Rear II of Kentucky.   There is a lot more research necessary.  While I have tried to insure that no errors were entered, I would appreciate anyone letting me know of any corrections that need to be made.  I would also like to know of branches that are not shown here.  Some pictures of earlier O'Rears will also be posted here as I receive them. • O'Rear (Orear) Family Sketches - An account of the O'Rear family of Prince William County, Virginia in the early 1700s which has spread throughout the U.S. These sketches were originally written by the late Edward C. O'Rear II of Kentucky in 1978. Additional sketches have been added by Dennis O'Rear of California.

• Due to questions about how TMG would generate an individual narrative report, I have decided to post the individual narrative report for Judge E. C. Those using The Master Genealogist (TMG) for their genealogy program and wondering how the Sentences (for an older version  of the narrative) were created can see them on this page.
