John D. O'Rear was born in 1851 at Madison County, Alabama.^1,3 He was enumerated with Capt. James Martin O'Rear in 1860 on the Census at Walker County, Alabama.⁴ According to a 1938 interview in a Jasper, Alabama, newspaper, Yankee soldiers shot and killed a John O'Rear of Jasper who delayed his escape to eat his dinner. It is not known who this John O'Rear was although it was thought that he was a son of James Martin and Martha (McCallister) O"Rear. Since this John O'Rear married after the Civil War and had children born between 1873 and 1886, it must be assumed that it is another John O'Rear although no other such person is known.⁵

John D. O'Rear appeared on the census of 1870 at Como, Mississippi.⁶ He resided in 1871 at Panola County, Mississippi.² He married Opal Wilson.³ John D. O'Rear died between 1886 and 1890 at Pamola County, Mississippi.⁵
