     Benjamin Jameson Douthitt was also known as Benjamin J. Douthitt.² He was born on 13 October 1822 at Madison County, Kentucky.³ He witnessed the will of Charlotte Jameson on 30 December 1841 at Montgomery County, Kentucky.^4,2 Benjamin Jameson Douthitt married Armelda Elizabeth Patterson, daughter of Jacob Patterson and Nancy O'Rear, on 7 March 1848.¹ Benjamin Jameson Douthitt died on 24 January 1864 at Madison County, Kentucky, at age 41.³

The funeral services of Mrs. Nellie Dean were held yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock, at the residence. The Rev. Mr. Whinnery, pastor of the M. E. church at Windom, conducted the services. Obituary
Mrs. Nellie Dean, wife of Dr. Geo. R. Dean entered into life and rest eternal in McPherson Friday, January 16, 1903. Nellie Cheney was born in Christian county, Illinois August 6, 1875. In 1883 she removed with her parents to McPherson, Kansas. Here she grew to maturity and received her education. At the age of twelve was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church. At this time she began work for the master. She was one of the charter members fo the Epworth League at this place. November 8, 1894, she was united in marriage to Dr. Geo. R. Dean of Windom, Kansas. In this little village with her husband she immediately entered into christian work, with meekness accepting various positions of responsibility. She was quiet and unassuming in manners and went about doing good. Her hands touched the fevered brow and her words of cheer encouraged many troubled hearts. Her life was one of service, her christian character was known by her works. For a year or two her health has been declining. In August 1902 they sold their beautiful home and started in search of health. They traveled through the south and southwest. Receiving no benefit about three weeks ago they returned to McPherson there to await the final end which they saw slowly approaching. For the sake of others she clung to life, but at the same time she was submissive to the will of the Master. She gave some instructions in regard to the funeral and told the relatives not to grieve for her too much. At the last she said: "I can not see anything. How is it with you? It is all right with me," and her suffering was over. Mrs. Dean was a member of the Degree of Honor and of the order of Eastern Star. The funeral services were held at the residence on East Marlin street Sunday at one o'clock. The services were in charge of Rev. W. V. Whinery pastor at Windom, assisted by Rev. W. H. Rose, pastor at McPherson. The Degree of Honor had charge fo the services at the grave. The remains were laid to rest in the McPherson cemetery. She leaves to mourn her departure, George R. Dean, husband, McPherson; Laura Cheney, mother and Nuna Cheney, sister Inman; Glenn Cheney, brother, Newton, and little Charlie, the adopted son, and many other relatives and friends. A successful physician and surgeon at Minneola, Dr. Van Blaricum has been a resident of Clark County since 1910. For a number of years he has devoted his best energies to his profession, but has also interested himself in other affairs, especially in the prosecution of war activities at Minneola, and is one of the men looked upon as leaders in that community.

Mr. Van Blaricum was born in 1874 and has lived in Kansas since he was five years of age. He is of an American family of three generations in this country. His grandfather, William H. Van Blaricum, came to the United States from Holland. Dr. Van Blaricum's father, a veteran of the Civil war, is still living at McPherson, Kansas, at the advanced age of eighty-three. His name is William Harrison Van Blaricum. He was born in Pratt County, Illinois, in 1835 and grew up on a farm. He lived in Illinois until the outbreak of the Civil war and in 1861 enlisted in the Union army in the One Hundred and Sixth Illinois Infantry. He saw active and strenuous service until the close of the war. He was in General Grant's army during the magnificent Mississippi Valley campaign, beginning at Forts Henry and Donelson and continuing through to Vicksburg. He was always in the ranks as a private, and though countless times exposed to danger escaped wounds or capture. On coming to Kansas in 1879 he bought land near the county seat of McPherson County. He was content with the ownership of a quarter section and did general farming and fruit raising. He is now retired. He is active in the Grand Army of the Republic, is a republican voter and a member of the Baptist Church.

William H. Van Blaricum married in Illinois Sarah J. Verner. Her parents came from the British Isles to America and a few years after establishing their home in the United States they fell victims to an epidemic which carried them off, leaving three sons and a daughter, all small children. The brothers and sister were separated, and Mrs. Van Blaricum grew up at Springfield, Illinois, where she acquired a liberal education. She and her husband have two children, Dr. Van Blaricum and Anna, wife of George H. Sitts, of McPherson County, Kansas.

Dr. Van Blaricum acquired his primary education in the country schools of McPherson County and later attended school at the county seat. For a few years he was a teacher in that county and then took up the study of medicine in the Kansas City Medical College, where after four years of work he was graduated Doctor of Medicine in 1901. He practiced for a time at Moundville, Missouri, but the failing health of his wife caused him to seek another location for her benefit. After two years of prospecting he established himself at Minneola in 1910. Dr. Van Blaricum has always kept in close touch with advances in medical knowledge and facilities and has taken post-graduate work in the Chicago Poli clinic, Illinois Post-Graduate School and the Chicago Post-Graduate School. He is active in the County and State Medical societies. He has identified himself with all the auxiliary movements in Minneola for the raising of funds and prosecution of war work. Dr. Van Blaricum is affiliated with the Masonic and Odd Fellow fraternities and in politics is a republican. He was a supporter of Colonel Roosevelt in 1912.

At McPherson, Kansas, June 10, 1903, he married Miss Bettie Dean, daughter of Thornton and Hettie (Matthews) Dean. Her father came from Kentucky and was a pioneer settler in McPherson County, where he spent the rest of his days as a farmer. Mrs. Van Blaricum was born in McPherson County, Kansas, in June, 1877. She has a brother, Dr. George Dean, of McPherson, and a sister, Maggie, who died as Mrs. Charles Guy. Dr. and Mrs. Van Blaricum have two children, Gordon Dean and Bernadean.

     I have again concluded to pen you a few lines believing that through some unsteadiness of the mailes you have failed to receive my letters. I cannot believe that you deem me unworthy of a place in your memory or at least unworthy of a response to my communications. Lizzie I do not propose in my correspond- ence to prove a source of annoyance, or to render you unhappy by claiming any portion of your time that can be better employed, but Lizzie you must know that my repeated efforts to prompt you to favor me with one line penned by your hand has been all in vain and that it is enough to give anyone uneasiness whose heart has learned to love. I have written to you several times & then waited patiently for an answer but alas not one word oh, if you have allowed me to cherish vain hopes & I am to teach a fond heart to forget you; let me know itso that I may commence the instruction, but first let me know in what way I have offended, that it may not prove a stumbling block in the future. Yes & if you harden your heart that has beat so findly to your memory that it must seek some kindred heart whose mistress cannot learn to love another. I must speak plainly Lizzie for the heart thats in me is wounded; I cannot say more until I read your decision from your own pen, if there is anything wrong you must tell me freely what it is. I have through the unlimited mercy of heavens King gotten safe through the recent battles & only wish to live that I may serve him in an acceptable manner. Ben and all the young men of your acquaintance are well and getting along finely. I am enjoying fine health at present.
