Benjamin O'Rear was born on 20 February 1746/47 at Prince William County, Virginia.1,3,4,5,6 He married Mary Catlett circa 1774 at USA.2 Benjamin O'Rear appeared on the tax list at Dittengen Parish, Fauquier County, Virginia, on 10 June 1775.7 He built his home, Liberty Hill, in 1780 at Paris, Virginia.8 He wasshown on the tax list between 1782 and 1799 at Fauquier County, Virginia, by Travers Nash.9,10 He signed a religious petition in 1786 at Fauquier County, Virginia.11 He appeared on the tax list at Fauquier County, Virginia, in 1787.12 He, Mary Catlett, and Jesse O'Rear leased 190 acres of the Fairfax Proprietary land on 5 June 1787 at Liberty Hill near Ashby Gap, White Post, Virginia.13 Benjamin O'Rear, Mary Catlett, and Jesse O'Rear leased 140 acres of the Fairfax Proprietary land in 1792 at Liberty Hill near Ashby Gap, White Post, Virginia.13 Benjamin O'Rear was sheriff, justice of the peace, and a farmer at Frederick County, Virginia, after 1799.8,14 Between 1800 and 1830, Benjamin O'Rear at a blacksmith's shop, Mechanicsville, Virginia, supervised the building of the first machine that cleaned wheat (the reaper) which he had invented. It was built by John Turner and Frank Ash, who did the wood work, and by Daughety, a black man skilled as a blacksmith, who did the iron work. It is said by one who remembers seeing the machine in operation that it cleaned the wheat as well as the modern thresher. Since he did not obtain a patent on his thresher, Benjamin O'Rear lost the credit of having been the inventor.8 He appeared on the census of 1810 at Frederick County, Virginia.15 He married Catherine Jones on 12 August 1812 at Frederick County, Virginia.16 Benjamin O'Rear married Catherine Jones on 3 September 1818 at Frederick County, Virginia.17 Benjamin O'Rear was sheriff between 1823 and 25 March 1826 at Frederick County, Virginia.17 He died on 26 December 1826 at age 79 at Frederick County, Virginia, but may have occurred in the portion of Fredeick that became Clarke County.2,4 He was buried after 26 December 1826 at Liberty Hill Cemetery, Clarke County, Virginia.1
